Our commitment to the sector under LGR and devolution

The SALC professional team is committed to championing the vital role, value and resilience of local councils within the evolving local government landscape.

In the face of ongoing uncertainty, SALC will provide consistent support to its members, ensuring they are well-informed, equipped and represented.

Building on early learning, SALC will actively contribute to shaping future governance arrangements, advocating for local councils to be fully recognised as essential partners within any restructured system of local government.

Through this approach, SALC aims to strengthen the voice and influence of local councils whilst fostering meaningful engagement with key stakeholders.

 
 

SALC super forum 

On 2nd June we held an online forum for all parishes across Suffolk to hear the latest information on LGR plans.  The session heard from guest local and national speakers and an overview of SALC's strategy going forward.

Future Suffolk - website

The Future Suffolk website was launched on 15th May 2026 as an LGR hub.   It provides:

  • a trusted source of information

  • created jointly by councils

  • contains latest news and updates

  • is a single point of contact

Government issues Statement

On 25th March the Government issued a Written Ministerial Statement confirming its decisions regarding Local Government Organisation (LGR) in Suffolk.    The Government has confirmed that the three-unitary model for Suffolk will proceed, including a boundary change to expand the size of Ipswich.  READ THE FULL STATEMENT HERE.

Neighbourhood empowerment

When we responded to the Three Unitaries for Suffolk business case, we recognised and welcomed the fact that the proposals presented an opportunity to reset and modernise local government in Suffolk offering potential to:

  • strengthen neighbourhood empowerment

  • deepen community engagement

  • build on existing good practice and

  • support collaboration across the three new councils

We welcomed the commitment to build strong relationships with our sector and supported the early creation of a new Town Council and local area working model that uses neighbourhood governance, community partnerships, thematic forums and digital tools.
